Positions:
Acoustical Engineer/Physicist (2 positions) - (Grass Valley)
Impulse Devices (www.impulsedevices.com) is a unique, well-funded, and dynamic startup company in Grass Valley (1 hr northeast of Sacramento) engaged in research and development of high power acoustic devices that will be capable of generating thermonuclear fusion reactions via the implosion of gas cavities in liquid metals. Our goal is to revolutionize the energy industry by developing low-cost, pollution-free, environmentally friendly energy with a virtually unlimited fuel source. We are now building a technically strong, highly motivated and fast-moving team that prides itself on innovation and scientific excellence.
We are seeking two acoustical Sr. / Jr. engineers / physicists to help us design and develop liquid-filled, high-pressure acoustic cavitation devices, and acoustic and plasma diagnostics instrumentation as well as perform experiments and numerical simulations to determine plasma temperatures and pressures inside the cavities.
Skills Required:
Experience with high-pressure vessel engineering principles.
Basic machining skills and CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
Thorough understanding of general acoustics. Low frequency (20 kHz) , high power acoustics experience preferred but not required.
Basic understanding of existing engineering analysis tools (Matlab, FEA, CFD, ect)
Ability to use and develop high-speed (Ghz) electronic instrumentation for acoustic and light detection (PMTs, MCP-PMTs, Spectrometers, PZT/PVDF/Fiberoptic Hydrophones, etc).
Experience in plasma physics (simulations & experiments) preferred but not required.
Strong analytic problem solving skills.
Strong organization and documentation skills.
Ability to present data in professional meetings as well as publish in scientific journals.
Ability to be a team player, exhibiting strong interpersonal skills.
Job Descripton:
The ultimate goal is the development of high power acoustic cavitation devices for creating and violently imploding cavities in liquids. The process, sonoluminescence, produces extremely high temperatures >100,000 C. Our initial goal is to design and construct devices to increase this peak temperature to millions of degrees where fusion reactions are possible. This process, Acoustic Fusion, is most closely related to Laser Inertial Confinement Fusion where a target capsule is imploded using laser energy. In Acoustic Fusion, the "target" is the cavity in the liquid. The energy for implosion comes from acoustic standing waves in a high pressure steel resonator rather than from lasers
Because the technology spans so many areas of physics, expertise in acoustics, nuclear physics, spectroscopy, material science, and chemistry are all desirable. Work will be hands on, running experiments at high static pressures, collecting data, and evaluating the data to determine the next resonator design.
The device must produce fusion reactions in a repeatable manner that holds up to scientific scrutiny. This short term goal will include addressing scientific questions raised and conducting additional tests to verify other aspects of the fusion reactions being produced.
Out ultimate goal is to develop this technology further into an energy generation technology where heavy hydrogen, the fuel of fusion reactors, can be used in novel, non-polluting, and efficient electric power generators.
Applicants should have at least a BS, Masters and preferably a PhD in engineering, physics, and / or chemistry with emphasis in: mechanical design, acoustics, plasma diagnostics / spectroscopy, and numerical hydrodynamic simulation codes (e.g., HYADES)
